Why I Fell in Love with Romance Novels—and Why I Started Writing Them

Hello, and welcome to my little corner of the internet! I’m Melinda Kenyon, and if you’ve landed here, chances are you love romance as much as I do. Today, I want to share a bit about why I fell head-over-heels for this genre and what inspired me to begin writing my own love stories.

Romance novels have always been my escape. From the moment I picked up my first one, I was captivated—not just by the heart-fluttering moments and grand gestures, but by the resilience of the characters. There’s something incredibly powerful about watching people face seemingly insurmountable odds, only to find strength, healing, and ultimately love. It’s a reminder that no matter how hard life gets, there’s always hope, always a chance for a happy ending.

Life isn’t always easy—we all know that. I’ve had my share of moves, career changes, and challenges, but through it all, I’ve learned that love is what anchors us. My husband and I have built a life together that’s full of adventures, laughter, and even the occasional chaos (thanks, pets!). It’s those moments of partnership and perseverance that inspire the stories I write.

So, why did I start writing? Honestly, it began as a whisper—a little dream I carried in my heart for years. I’ve always been a storyteller, spinning tales in my mind during long walks on the beach or quiet sunsets. But it wasn’t until recently, when I was working on new gardens and reimagining my home, that I realized I had the courage to reimagine my creative life, too.

I wanted to write stories where love wasn’t just a fleeting spark but a force that transforms and endures. I wanted to write about characters who are messy and imperfect, who make mistakes but learn, grow, and ultimately discover that they’re worthy of love.

Romance novels remind us that we are capable of facing life’s storms, and even after the hardest days, we can find light—and love—on the other side. That’s why I write. That’s why I love romance.
